Workshop 2 – Sunday 31 August 2008, ICC Durban: 08H30 – 13H00
Title: International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) - How to apply ICF Tools in a structured rehabilitation management in SCI
Background:
The ICF is the universal standard to describe the functioning and disability of patients with health conditions. An ICF-based management using ICF-based tools is required to implement it in the rehabilitation process of persons with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).
Objective:
The aims of the workshop are to (1) present different ICF-based Tools (ICF Core Set for SCI, ICF Assessment Sheet, ICF Categorical Profile and ICF Evaluations Display), to (2) illustrate their integration into a structured rehabilitation process based on case examples, and (3) to enable rehabilitation practitioners to handle these ICF-based Tools in rehabilitation practice.
Methods:
Case studies elaborated in project “ICF-based case studies in SCI” (www.icf-casestudies.org) performed at the Swiss Paraplegic Research, Nottwil, Switzerland will be presented after an introduction to the ICF and to ICF-based tools. Practical exercises for the implementation of all ICF-based tools in the different steps of the rehabilitation process will be performed by the participants and discussed in the group.
After the workshops the participants will know: 1) the conceptual background of the ICF, 2) how to find information in the ICF, and 3) how to apply the ICF in the rehabilitation practice using ICF-based tools.

Workshop 4 – Monday 01 September 2008, ICC Durban: Track B, 14H00 – 16H30
Title: Developing an agreed taxonomy for Non-Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury
It is well documented that damage to the ‘neural elements in the spinal canal (spinal cord and cauda equina) resulting in resolving or permanent neurological deficit’ can arise from non traumatic causes ie Non-traumatic spinal cord injury (NTSCI).
Currently, there is no internationally agreed definition on exactly what conditions should be considered as NTSCI. Work has been progressing, however, to enable classification of NTSCI for the International Data Set. This workshop will be preceded by a survey of clinicians working in this field using a Delphi process and all participants will be provided with reading material.
The workshop will be designed to help clarify the taxonomy and, in particular, clarify the difficult issues of classification when there is an iatrogenic component to the development of neurological loss and where underlying conditions such as HIV/AIDS complex disorders have resulted in neurological loss. A final survey of participants will take place following the workshop so that the taxonomy can be finalised.

Title: Urodynamics for non urologists by urologists
Aim:
To teach and discuss the different parameters used to obtain a functional diagnosis of the neurogenic lower urinary tract in spinal cord injured patients. A forum of discussion is created by urologist and rehabilitation specialist together
